The Myth of Absolute Certainty

At the other end of the spectrum sits pure randomness. In theory, random events have equal probability across all possible outcomes, meaning zero predictability.

Human beings find absolute certainty comfortable. When we build medical models or behavioral paradigms, we long for linear predictability. We cling to the 80/20 Pareto rule; when an outcome lands around 80%, we celebrate and claim the system is linear or quasi-linear, dismissing the remaining 20% of variability as mere “noise.”

Dismissing the variance does not mean it stops existing. It simply means the variance disrupts our preferred story about the universe.

A living central nervous system is neither a linear calculator nor a random coin toss. It is a nonlinear dynamical system, and by definition, nonlinear systems operate entirely in the rich territory between 0% and 100% probability.

This is the true intersection between quantum mechanics and biological life: quantum mechanics is fundamentally about probability, determining the likelihood of an event occurring, and recognizing that the act of observation itself shifts and defines that probability.

When people say they resist quantum mathematics or dynamical models, what they often mean is that they prefer a smaller, neatly packaged world where everything is all-or-none. Yet biological reality thrives in the unfolding space of shifting likelihoods. Once you understand that life operates on probabilities rather than rigid equations, you stop trying to force the central nervous system into linear boxes and begin learning how to dance with how it actually functions.
