Traumatic brain injury and stroke recovery

This is where restorative and compensatory rehabilitation do their core work. Some pathways can be rebuilt with repeated, targeted load. Some cannot, and those need a route around them.

Wherever it landed

An injury does not follow the map, so this page names the pattern and leaves the systems to the assessment.

Wherever the injury landed

A brain injury does not respect the map. The assessment establishes which of the seven systems lost function, and the plan is built from that list.

Deep limbic system and basal ganglia

Mood, energy, sleep restoration and baseline anxiety, all of which change after an injury and all of which set the pace at which the rest can be rebuilt.

What people describe

Two people with the same scan describe different days, and the description is what the plan is built from.

  • Fatigue that arrives without warning and ends the day
  • Words that were automatic now needing to be found
  • Losing the plan halfway through carrying it out
  • Noise and light costing more than they used to

How we work with it

Start with an assessment

Start with a rehabilitation consultation. A self-directed assessment is the wrong first step here. Tell us what happened and where you are now, and we will say honestly what is worth trying.

Then the work itself

For this presentation that usually means Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy, structured therapy after injury, illness or decline. Emotional regulation and autonomic stability run alongside the cognitive exercises, because they set the pace at which anything else can be rebuilt.

Questions people ask

What people ask after an injury, including how long is too long to start.

How long after the injury is it too late?

There is no cut-off we would defend. Restorative gains are largest early, but compensatory work is useful at any point, and the emotional and autonomic side responds throughout.

Restorative therapy uses repetitive, targeted challenge to reinforce, repair and physically rebuild weakened pathways. Compensatory therapy teaches practical workarounds and creates new neural detours around an area that cannot be restored. Most clients need both.

Take something home with you

Between sessions is where most of the work happens. These are the downloads and the journal we hand to clients, sold through our storefront.

My “Lived-Experience” Journal

Handwriting reaches memory and emotional processing along pathways typing does not. Shipped inside the US.

Start with a conversation, not a form

Tell us what happened and where you are now. Recovery after injury does not fit a self-directed intake, so this one begins with a person.
