Visual processing

Visual processing is what the brain does with what the eyes deliver. Vision can test as normal and the picture can still arrive slowly, unstably, or without the figure separating from the ground.

After the eyes have done their part

Two systems handle what arrives from the eyes, and they hand work to each other.

Occipital lobe

Figure-ground discrimination, visual discrimination, visual-motor integration, visual processing speed and visual tracking.

Parietal lobes

Visual-spatial attention and memory, and visual sequential memory.

What people describe

Vision that tests as normal and reading that does not work are not a contradiction. They are measuring different things.

  • Eyes sliding off the line when reading
  • Losing an object that is in plain sight
  • Copying from a board taking far longer than it should
  • Catching, cutting and handwriting all lagging together

How we work with it

Then the work itself

For this presentation that usually means Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy, structured therapy after injury, illness or decline. Tracking, figure-ground discrimination and visual-motor integration are trained as separate skills, matched to whichever the assessment flagged.

Questions people ask

What people ask when the eye exam came back clear and reading still does not work.

Have I not already had my eyes checked?

Probably, and that is worth doing. An eye exam measures the optics. Visual processing measures what the brain does with the signal afterwards, and the two can disagree.

Targeted, repeated work on discrimination, tracking and visual-motor integration, matched to the domain the assessment flagged.

Yes. Neuroplasticity is not restricted to childhood, though the plan and the pace differ.

Rule out the optics, then check the processing

An eye exam measures the signal arriving. This measures what the brain does with it afterwards.
