Sensory integration

Sensory integration is the joining of raw sensory input to physical movement, proprioception and spatial awareness. When it is not happening cleanly, the world arrives as separate pieces that have to be assembled by hand.

Three systems sharing one job

Integration is a handover between systems, so it can break at any of the three points.

Parietal lobes

Integrating incoming sensory data, left-right orientation, and visual-spatial attention.

Occipital lobe

Visual-motor integration and figure-ground discrimination, which decide what gets attended to at all.

Basal ganglia

The integration of feeling with movement, and fine-motor execution.

What people describe

When integration is not automatic it becomes conscious, and anything conscious costs attention that was needed elsewhere.

  • Bumping into the same doorway every time
  • Clothing, texture or noise deciding the mood of a day
  • Knowing where a limb is only by looking at it
  • Movement that needs conscious attention to stay coordinated

How we work with it

Then the work itself

For this presentation that usually means Developmental Milestones, the parent-led inventory for birth through seventy-two months. Proprioception, figure-ground discrimination and visual-motor integration are trained separately, because they contribute separately.

Questions people ask

What people ask when integration is not automatic and everything costs more attention.

Is this the same as sensory processing disorder?

It overlaps. We work from the systems producing the friction, which is why the assessment matters more than the name.

Developmental Milestones. Perceptual-motor skills are one of its seven domains, alongside gross motor and fine motor.

The Individualized NeuroDevelopmental Profile, which reads the parietal, occipital and basal ganglia contributions alongside the other four systems.
