Karma as Information, Not Punishment

The Mechanics of Where You Are

Karma is one of the most widely misunderstood concepts in Eastern thought. Most people absorb it through an inherited framework of retribution: if something difficult happens today, it must mean you planted bad seeds in a past life, a past year, or a past moment, and the universe has arrived with a bill. It turns existence into a cosmic courtroom where you are either being rewarded for virtue or punished for your sins.

From an operational perspective, karma is not punishment; it is simply dependent origination. It is cause, condition, and effect.

Consider a simple physical reality: you cannot be in a car accident unless a vehicle is involved. Being in or near a car is a dependent condition upon which the event depends. That is not moral judgment; it is a description of the conditions required for an outcome to manifest.

When you strip away the moralizing, what we call “karma” is simply information. It informs you about what conditions have been present, what has been set in motion, and what pathways are currently available.

In programming, we talk about rules of production: what specific steps must execute for a system to produce an addition of ? Human experience operates under identical logic. When someone says, “I have so much anxiety,” the question is not what demon has seized you. The question is: what are the internal rules of production required to manufacture that state right now?

Worry does not arrive uninvited in the mail. If you are a dedicated worrier, when do you do your finest work? Precisely when there is nothing to worry about—because you immediately conclude that you must have overlooked something. You run the sequence. You cue up the internal disaster film, cast yourself in the leading role, and watch the wings shear off the aircraft. Naturally, your nervous system responds to the imagery.

There is an old Zen story where a student approaches Bodhidharma and pleads, “My mind is so agitated. Please bring it peace.”

Bodhidharma replies, “Bring me your mind, and I will pacify it.”

The student pauses and says, “I cannot find it.”

Bodhidharma smiles: “There. I have pacified it.”

The moment you look for the tangible object called “anxiety,” it vanishes, because it was never a physical thing you possessed. It was an active production cycle you were running.

Karma is merely proof that gravity still functions. It tells you where you are standing based on the steps taken to arrive here. You can tell yourself the tragic tale of how you got here and drown in guilt, or you can recognize the feedback: Here is where I am. What are the rules of production I am running, and what do I choose to do next?
