Calm Assertiveness

Why Your Pack Reads Energy, Not Reassurance

Years ago, Cesar Millan coined the phrase calm assertiveness to describe how pack animals interact. Dogs do not listen to our elaborate intellectual explanations. There is an old Gary Larson cartoon where a dog owner scolds his pet at length, and all the dog hears is its name followed by white noise. Dogs read energetic state. If a leader becomes nervous, hesitant, or reactive, the pack immediately looks around, senses the void, and attempts to take charge—often creating turmoil because they were never equipped to lead.

Human nervous systems operate under identical biological dynamics.

When clients walk into a neurofeedback office, they are often organized around acute distress. They arrive wearing a diagnostic label, holding tight to a symptom list, or trembling in apprehension. Naturally, practitioners trained in the traditional helping professions feel an immediate reflex: I have to fix this. I have to make them feel safe.

Yet attempting to forcefully soothe someone often produces the opposite result. Leaning in with anxious concern mimics the person who rushes up to an unfamiliar dog with ungrounded enthusiasm. The other nervous system registers that subtle agitation and wonders what emergency is unfolding.

Calm assertiveness is what Buddhist traditions describe as equanimity and non-reactivity. It does not mean becoming emotionally flat or detached. It means maintaining your center so completely that you do not buy into the disaster narrative walking through your door.

When someone speaks from panic, even nodding along can be unskillful if it signals unreflective agreement with their catastrophizing. Calm assertiveness holds a steady container:

You listen deeply to understand how they experience their world.

You decline to enter the drama or reinforce their terror.

You remain the calm human in the room, so their nervous system has a steady benchmark against which to orient.

When you lead with quiet, grounded clarity, the space settles. You don’t have to convince anyone that they are safe; your presence simply demonstrates that there is no emergency right now.
