Reconstructing the Horizon

The Illusion of Fixed Waves, Pure Noise, and Frozen Memory

In engineering and data science, what constitutes “noise”?

Noise is simply any aspect of a signal that you are not actively interested in at a given moment. It is not inherently useless or devoid of information; its classification depends entirely on what you intend to accomplish.

If you are running an electrical appliance in North America, the 60 Hz current is not noise—it is vital power. Plug that same North American appliance into a European 230-volt, 50 Hz outlet, and you will quickly burn out the internal circuits. The signal did not become “dirty”; the operational context changed.

In clinical neurofeedback, practitioners often stare at spectral density displays, matrix mirrors, or frequency charts, assuming those visual representations illustrate the functional reality of a human mind.

They do not.

An “alpha wave” is not a physical object floating beneath the scalp. It is a conceptual construct used to summarize a specific profile of energy flow captured at the surface. To claim that an alpha rhythm is hyper-localized to one specific pocket of brain tissue—and that auditory or visual feedback alters that region alone—overlooks the nature of sensory processing.

Unless you are performing open neurosurgery, any visual or auditory neurofeedback signal operates through at least second-order processing within the central nervous system. The eyes and ears receive the informational cues and route them globally throughout the entire cortical network. The response is holistic, systemic, and relational.

This mirrors how memory operates.

For generations, psychology treated human memory as a mechanical camera, assuming past events were recorded onto specific film reels stored in a mental filing cabinet. Modern neuroscience demonstrates that memory is actively reconstructed in the present.

When you recall a past event, your brain reconstructs that memory based on several converging factors:

Your current physiological activation and stress baseline in this exact room.

How you articulate and language that experience internally right now.

Your anticipated horizon of possible futures.

This active reconstruction is why eyewitness memory shifts over time and why human testimony rarely matches the mechanical consistency of a video recording.

The brain does not store static records, nor does it generate frozen frequencies. It is a living, non-linear system, continually re-evaluating its current horizon and reconstructing its reality from the inside out.
