Anxiety

Anxiety, in the way we work with it, is a nervous system that cannot drop out of high alert. The threat passes and the system stays up, because the mechanism that sets its resting speed is holding the wrong number.

Where the alert is set

Anxiety is generated below the level of the worry, in the systems that decide the body’s resting speed.

Basal ganglia

Anxiety level control, regulation of the body’s idle speed, and the integration of feeling with movement.

Cingulate system

Cognitive flexibility, and the rigid thought loops that keep the alarm running after the reason for it has gone.

What people describe

People describe anxiety as a feeling. What we assess is the setting underneath it: how readily the system stands down once nothing is asking it to stay up.

  • Being unable to drop out of alert even when nothing is wrong
  • A thought that gets in and will not shift for hours
  • A body that stays braced through a calm day
  • Sleep that starts late because the system will not settle

How we work with it

Start with an assessment

Start with the free anxiety screener. It takes a few minutes and tells you whether the alert is the whole picture. If it is worth going further, the Individualized NeuroDevelopmental Profile reads the basal ganglia alongside the other six systems.

Then the work itself

For this presentation that usually means Dynamical Neurofeedback®, regulation work that lets the nervous system self-correct. We do not work on the content of the worry. We work on how quickly the system comes back down, which is a different job and often the one nobody has done.

Questions people ask

What people ask before the free screener, including why we work on the setting and leave the worry alone.

Is the anxiety screener really free?

Yes. It is one of the short self-assessments on this site, it takes a few minutes, and there is no obligation attached to completing it.

Because the part we work on is not the content of the worry, it is the setting. Dynamical Neurofeedback® shows the nervous system its own activity so it can find its way back down. Many clients keep their therapist and do both.

Yes. The Individualized NeuroDevelopmental Profile reads the basal ganglia alongside the other six systems, so you see whether the alert is the whole story or one part of a wider picture.
