ADD and ADHD

ADD and ADHD show up as trouble holding attention where you want it, acting before the thought finishes, and losing the thread of a task partway through. The label names the complaint. We work on the brain systems producing it.

Two systems, one complaint

Attention is produced by more than one system, so “ADHD” names a pair of systems working against each other.

Prefrontal cortex

Flexible and focused attention, decision speed, impulse control, and the reasoning that decides what you do next.

Parietal lobes

Divided and diverted attention, and the working memory that holds a task open while you finish it.

What people describe

Attention complaints rarely arrive as “I cannot concentrate”. They arrive as specifics, and the specifics say which system to look at.

  • Reactions that land a beat behind everyone else’s
  • Strategic planning that falls apart mid-task
  • Attention that will not stay where it is put, or will not leave
  • Losing the end of an instruction before it finishes

How we work with it

Then the work itself

For this presentation that usually means Individualized NeuroDevelopmental Profile, the self-directed survey for ages seven through seniors. Attention is not trained as one thing. The plan separates focused attention, divided attention and decision speed, because they fail independently.

Questions people ask

What people ask when attention is the complaint, including the two we get asked to settle most: medication, and whether a diagnosis is needed first.

Is an ADHD diagnosis required before we start?

No. Our assessments are structured screening and profiling tools, not diagnostic instruments. They identify which neurological systems need support so remediation can be targeted, whether or not a formal diagnosis exists.

We do not prescribe and we do not replace anyone’s prescriber. Cognitive remediation and Dynamical Neurofeedback® work on the underlying attention and executive systems. Many clients do both.

The Individualized NeuroDevelopmental Profile, which covers ages seven through seniors. It reads attention, memory and executive function against all seven brain systems, so attention is read in company.

Find out which attention system is struggling

Focused attention, divided attention and working memory are three different jobs. The assessment says which one is costing you the day.
